At the end of the year, lots of
people love posting round-ups of their favorite books. I was lazy
and didn’t do a round up even though I read lots of good books, but
IF I WERE to have done one for 2018, at the tippy top of the list
would for sure be a novel titled, This is How it Always Is, by
Laurie Frankel.
Now, most of the authors I host on this show are non fiction
authors, because parenting thought leaders usually write, well,
parenting books, so it’s rare that I chat with a fiction writer.
But I think this is such a relevant exception because this book is
about raising a trans child, a subject that is near and dear to my
heart because I have a trans brother, but we haven’t had a chance
to explore it yet on the podcast, so I’m grateful for the
opportunity to do so. But I’ve also been telling people that the
book is not just like a LGBTQ niche fiction, it’s such a poignant
read for parents in general, and really for all human beings, sort
of exploring these transcendent themes that we all wrestle with.
It’s just so well written and gripping and challenging and
validating and beautiful all at the same time.
I talk with Laurie about her life as a parent raising a trans child herself, and how that intersects with her fictional account. We talk about the characters she has created, as well as all the issues that arise with raising transgender children.
